Pablo Gad – Hard Time

Hard TimeThis 1980 classic is now most well-known for its highly-sampled pro-marijuana vocals: DJ L.A.B., DJ Madd, Matta, and Ed Solo ft. The Skool of Thought (in turn remixed by Krafty Kuts) have all used it, as did The Prodigy famously on “Fire.” However, it is definitely a fierce track in its own right, with a catchy melody and an almost hypnotic groove.

While several re-pressings now exist – with the title switched to the plural in some cases (as on the full-length LP) – all early 12-inches featured “Hard Time” on the A-side and a dub, entitled “Lighter Shade Of Black,” on the reverse. (more…)

Gappy Ranks & P-Money – Baddest

P-Money and Gappy RanksWith the most recent visit to New Zealand from the man Gappy, I thought it was a great chance to review a tune he collaborated with our local golden boy of hip hop, on. Peter Wadams, or better known to me and you as P-Money.

This tune was released around 6 months ago and first came to my attention when I saw it on the whiteboard in the Base FM Studio, as track of the week. I had to hear this! (more…)

Blackboard Jungle Rack

28 – 30 March @ Prestatyn, Wales

The much anticipated and well-attended United Nations of Dub took place from 28 – 30 March. This 3-day indoor sound system festival that is only in its second edition is already a juggernaut of an event.

However with its 3 indoor sound system arenas, heated swimming pool, film screenings, and pub all in one close area, it gives a unique community feel to it and served the purpose perfectly. (more…)

Chronixx – Capture Land

Dread and TerribleThis is the second time I have reviewed a Chronixx tune here, but to be honest, if he keeps up this high calibre, you can expect a few more!

‘Capture Land’ is off his latest ‘Dread & Terrible’ E.P. and is reminiscent of the good ol’ rub-a-dub era of the early/mid eighties. It is a full bodied riddim with a driving bassline that carries it along very nicely indeed. (more…)

Hamburg Connection: Crucial Vibes and I-Livity I-Fi in Aotearoa

Julian & Crucial BThis summer, local reggae fans were treated to a unique reggae experience. Crucial B of Crucial Vibes Sound System and Julian Livity of I-Livity I-Fi-Roots and Culture Sound System, two veteran German reggae selectors, spent about three and a half weeks here.

Primarily in the country to perform at  the ‘Off The Radar’ (OTR) festival (Wellesford, Auckland, 31 Jan – 2 Feb), the pair also spent time travelling and performing a few extra gigs. Now back in Hamburg, I caught up with these selectors to reflect on their visit and to find out more about what brought them to this end of the world. (more…)
