SATURDAY 17 OCTOBER – SAN FRANCISCO BATHHOUSE, WGTN
NiceUp.Org.Nz & Newtown Sound proudly present, the return of pioneering UK hip-hop deejay, Daddy Skitz – a true originator who has guided and inspired the scene the world-over with his masterful merging of hip-hop with bass heavy reggae and soundsystem culture.
Joining him for the first time in Australasia is Deadly Hunta – an outstanding artist who has been shaking up dancehalls across the UK and Europe, with his unrivaled lyrical styling, machine-gun ragga flows and massive and conscious vibes!
DJ Skitz released his debut 12″ in 1996 alongside the then emerging, Roots Manuva. He went on to release the classic and critically acclaimed album, Countryman, featuring an all-star artist list including Skinnyman, Est’elle, Dynamite MC, Phi-Life Cypher, Taskforce, Rodney P and Roots Manuva and has also worked with DJ Die, Roni Size, Kardinal Offishal, Million Dan and Saian Supa Crew to name just a few.
Skitz conceived and co-hosted the hugely influential BBC 1Xtra flagship hip-hop show, Original Fever. The radio show was co-hosted by Rodney P and received a phenomenal response from around the world, showcasing the best in new UK hip-hop and further establishing the British scene as a formidable force in hip-hop music.
He compiled two Homegrown mix-CDs featuring all UK artists and also the infamous Bad Meaning Good mix. He has toured and played across the world, both solo and with artists such as Jay Z, Kanye West, Ghostface Killah and The Roots, and also to sell-out audiences here in Aotearoa with Rodney P on the Ghetto Red Hot Tour 2008.
With the up-coming release of his much awaited second album, Sticksman, the next chapter of this UK hip-hop reggae top shotta is about to set off right here in Aotearoa this October.
Giving the NZ massive the chance to catch a slew of exclusive tunes and fresh works from fellow album contributors such as Kardinal Offishal, Rodney P, Masta Ace, Deadly Hunta, Iron Braydz, Brotherman, Skibbadee, Harry Shotta, Dynamite MC, Taskforce, Wordsworth and Orifice Vulgatron from Foreign Beggars.
Alongside Skitz, and in Aotearoa for the first time is Deadly Hunta – hailed as one of the most dynamic and innovative artists to emerge in hip-hop reggae, Hunta has become renowned for his musical diversity – being equally at ease and skilled in hip-hop, reggae and dancehall – positive and conscious lyrics and for the onslaught of pure energy that he brings to his live shows.
Having smashed the underground club and radio circuit and after receiving rave reviews across UK and Europe, word of this rising star is growing and spreading fast. After performing on the Homegrown tour and at festivals such as Glastonbury and WOMAD, Hunta has gone on to tour across France, Denmark, Bulgaria and Spain, and released his debut-mix, Diamonds in the Dirt, Vol. 1, mixed by DJ Skitz.
The duo reach Aotearoa to bring their heavyweight live shows to the celebrated Ghetto Red Hot series which is renowned across the country for spreading the best in 80s, 90s and current dancehall reggae with classic old and new-school Jamaican influenced hip-hip from the UK, US, Canada, Europe and NZ.
