NiceUp! Records 7”

International Record Store Day has been a great way to celebrate vinyl and local record stores that provide a focal point for selectors, collectors, producers, vocalists and music lovers in general to dig, discuss and share musical knowledge. Or as in my case, get your hands on your favourite tunes.

Every year as part of International Record Store Day there are a number of limited releases available only for this day. The Everytime 7” by Champian is part of a two 7” box-set released for Record Store Day 2014 on NiceUp! Records, produced by Mr Benn.

Mr Benn is a DJ/producer hailing from Bristol. His much acclaimed debut album, Shake a Leg, was released last year on Niceup! Records. DJing and playing bass from his teens, he has played in numerous bands and has collected and played a wide variety of sounds, from  jungle to hip-hop to funk  to ska and reggae/dancehall. His productions are characteristically dance floor friendly and have featured a mix of veteran artists such as Tenor Fly, Topcat, the Ragga Twins, and Serocee, to newer artists such as Blackout JA and Eva Lazarus.

Champian has been gracing mics all over London since the early 80s, making a name for himself on Jamdown Rockers Sound. He now performs all over the UK and further afield, is a resident at London’s Tighten Up and Trash and Ready sessions, and forms a tight team with Steve Rice’s Bristol-based, Down Beat Melody Sound. Champ can chat over everything from Studio One or rocksteady classics, lovers, to the digital sounds of the 80s, often broken up with his latest football punditry! He can liven up and make any dance bubble with an intelligent and witty flow, always bringing vibes by the truck full.

The Stars riddim is a bit different to Mr Benn’s usual dance floor party pieces. Here Champ delivers a bit of lovers as free-flowing and sharp as his beloved Arsenal (on a good day).  The result is a sweet deejay cut to Cornell Campbell’s classic. If you can find a copy get your hands on it. I’m looking forward to more releases by Champian.
