Newtown Sound in association with PDSL presents: The Newtown Festival Fair Day DJ Stage. Located in the heart of Newtown, the stage will be situated at Newtown Ave, a hot spot of cultural diversity and activity, reflecting Newtown’s many faces and peoples.
With performances and music from all over the world, the DJ Stage promises to be an exciting part of this year’s festival fair day. Some of Wellington’s finest DJs, including many from Newtown itself, will showcase urban music influenced and created in Africa, India, USA, Jamaica and right here in Newtown.

African Beats showcase: DJ Dozen, Taku, Tawanda and guests
Where it all began, Africa! Classic and contemporary African beats with DJ Dozen, one of Wellington’s top djs and also the organiser of African Dance parties and the Miss Africa competition. Joined on stage by vocalist Taku and percussionist Tawanda, with other special guests, showcasing the best in African music.

Hip-hop with DJ Kerb and MC Juse 1
Long time, Wellington hip hop artists DJ Kerb and MC Juse 1 have been working together in many fields for several years. Creating urban imagery and music to put the Capital on the map among the best of the best in Aotearoa’s strong hip hop community. A combination of razor sharp skills on both the turntables and microphone, the beats and lyrics of this duo won’t disappoint. The also regularly host the Wednesday Night Jam on Radio Active 89FM, 9pm to 11pm Wednesdays.
2pm to 3pm
Funk, soul and hip hop with DJ Rhys B and MC Exhale
Wellington’s own godfather of DJing, the legendary Rhys B, teams up with MC Exhale to deliver a set of the best urban funk, soul and hip hop. DJ Rhys B has played an important part in the development of Wellington’s DJ community and he plays impressive sets throughout the city. Rhys has also been a longtime DJ on Radio Active 89FM. Audiences will also be treated to an exclusive set of brand new material from Exhale, one of the cities finest hip hop vocalists
3pm to 4pm
Reggae showcase: DJ Manray presents Vital Sounds with MC Ras Stone
DJ Manray and MC Ras Stone are the team behind both the Vital Sounds and the Spice Traders nights, two of the city’s favourite regular dances. With a massive collection of all spectrum of reggae music, Manray is a key player among the reggae community here in Wellington. Ras Stone, an experienced vocalist with a distinctive style who provides solid and potent reggae lyrics delivered with his unique voice.
4pm to 5pm
Big Bada Boom and Night Mechanics
Following their debut EP release, Wellington’s Big Bada Boom team up with The Night Mechanics, two groups leading the way in South Asian urban music in New Zealand. Live interpretations of Bollywood, Bhangra, Asian underground and hip hop – the Indian way. Adding the spice to the DJ stage, don’t miss the chance to catch these performers serving it up extra hot!
