The Groove Thief is nearing his fifth anniversary of promoting quality music in Hong Kong. From the irie state of Colorado in the USA, his focus may be on dub, reggae, and other Jamaican-influence styles, but he firmly believes a good tune is a good tune regardless of genre. He has been described as “among Hong Kong’s leading arbiters of musical taste” by the South China Morning Post.
Equally dedicated to both journalism and live events, The Groove Thief regularly does reviews and interviews at NiceUp, is Time Out Hong Kong magazine’s main clubbing writer covering all aspects of the local scene, and also runs his own site at TheGrooveThief.com.
As a promoter and curator, he works with the French A/V duo ▶▶△ to produce eclectic events under their POMEGRANATE brand. With a 2-year residency at infamous techno club oma (featuring a veritable who’s who of local DJ guests) plus multiple free outdoor events hosted including the annual 音樂節 – La Fête de la Musique, POMEGRANATE is arguably Hong Kong’s best kept musical secret.
Behind the decks, he frequently performs for Heavy Hongkong and Bass Music China, alongside international acts like Cojie, Demolition Man, Iration Steppas, Mungo’s Hi Fi, Tippa Irie, and U Brown, and at major festivals such as Clockenflap and Secret Island Party. Known for his genre-sprawling sets, he particularly enjoys vintage dub as well as digital reggae and those late-night 140 vibes.
This mix features some fresh dubplates, excursions through Stalag and Real Rock, a few TGT edits, as well as a new mashup of Mungo’s Hi Fi x Sylford Walker entitled “G and 20 To Jah.” Enjoy!
