I would say that I first started listening to music while my mum was still carrying me. Before I was born, that is! As there was always music playing at home.
But thinking about it, the first tune that I can remember taking any notice of was 007 by the late Desmond Dekker, a tune that brings back memories of me jumping up and down in my cot while my Dad was playing records on the gram. My Dad was also a great lover of music and he would buy records every week, which would mean a trek to the other side of London to one of the specialist record stores. My Mum would also come home from work in the evening with records she had bought on her way home.
In the early 70s my brothers arrived from Jamaica and between them they would buy so many records a week, some of which would consist of different versions of a record. Versions galore!
One day I went on a radio show as a guest of a friend of mine. It was a three-hour radio show and I was told to bring reggae music that I liked, and reminisce about what memories were bought back by the records that I played.
During the show the manager of the station came into the studio, apparently the telephone in the office down stairs was ringing off the hook, the listeners wanted to know who this was woman on air! I was invited to a meeting with the rest of the management and given my own show. Since then I have won three Revival Clashes and have three trophies on the mantelpiece!
