Neva Done is the debut EP from well-known Auckland vocalist Silva MC. Silva has been rising quickly through New Zealand’s roots and dancehall scene in recent years and established herself with an authentic JA style and flow in the live arena.
Her live work alongside serious names like Ladi6, Cornerstone Roots, Dam Native and Che Fu illustrates the speed at which she has cemented herself in the reggae scene.
The EP is short and sweet with four solid tunes and no unnecessary filler. Production is a truly international affair with producers from New Zealand, Jamaica, France and Chile lending their hands.
Kicking off with ‘Coming Right Through’, produced by DJ Parks of Ladi6 fame, the tune is a bubbling hip-hop piece that captures Silva’s live presence well and could easily connect with an audience wider than just the reggae scene. Up next is ‘Gideon Boots’, a solid roots tune riding on top of a slick cut to the Fade Away riddim.
Third up is ‘Guiding Star’, a collaboration with Jah Red Lion, the rising Chilean artist now resident in Auckland. The half Spanish, half English effort is set over a modern roots riddim and has a nicely contrasted vibe with Silva’s deejaying and Jah Red’s singing. Wrapping things up is ‘Dem Neva Could’, taking things back up-tempo. The tune is one of the highlights of the EP with solid lyrical presence.
All up the EP is a tight showcase of Silva’s talent and demonstrates that a harder-edge reggae sound continues to brew in New Zealand. Adding it to your summer rotation certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing.
