Irie analogue reggae music is coming to you by way of Dorset and Hampshire, England. Horus Records are in their own words, two guys who are “enthusiastic listeners and performers of music” who are now stepping up with their first release.
This double A-Side beauty straight from Stockport’s Bakery Studio has already been embraced by the outer-national reggae DJ community and is now available to the public in both digital and 7″ format.
Side A features Stally and the Breadwinners with ‘Riddim Box Dub’, a sublime and soulful dub excursion produced, mixed and written by Al Breadwinner. Al plays the instruments and has composed the riddim, while Stally augments the tune with some fine jazzy vibes from his spiraling tenor sax.
Side A-A features London resident Skinshape, a reggae/dub/hip-hop inspired beatmaker who works with all manner of instruments while building tracks with Ablelton music production software. This cut, ‘Soul Groove’ does indeed move the soul with its heavy dubbed-funk feel.
Some crispy guitar licks punctuate the riddim and complement the lowdown bass for the warm melodies of sassy singer and lyricist Anina. The vocal gives way to a finale of a storming organ solo courtesy of the Mr Jon Moody, reminding the listener of the days when Jackie Mitto would spice up Studio One recordings.
Each side was recorded to quarter inch reel-to-reel tape, giving it an authentic sound reminiscent of classic seventies dub. The Breadwinners are the Bakery Studio house band, which as the press release describes, may include as many as four or five musicians but is often just Al, stockpiling rhythm tracks for any visiting singers and players.
The Breadwinners and the Bakery Studio crew demonstrate a mature and well-rounded sound with these fresh gems, taking authentic inspiration and re-making the classic yard vibe as their own. They have a full length release also worth checking out, ‘Dubs Unlimited’, also available on King Spinna Records.
All in all, an enjoyable and solid first release for this fresh, independent label.
