Stinky Jim

Stinky Jim is a broadcaster (95bFM, Stinky Grooves since 1990) music journalist (Listener, Real Groove etc), record company owner/operator (Round Trip Mars .. SJD, Phelps & Munro, James Duncan, Jefferson Belt, The Naked And Famous etc) occasional studio type (Phase 5, Soundproof, Unitone Hi Fi) and most importantly – for over 20 years, a DJ/selector.

Probably best known for his longstanding passion for Jamaican music and enthusiasm for its myriad offshoots, Jim most often plays a variety of styles as well, ranging from the heftiest hip-hop, loose-limbed Latino styles, ez listening, un-ez listening, non-frilly funk, dirty old dubstep and stirring soul through to elsewhere business from odd parts of the globe and whatever else is currently cooking in the stinking kitchen. Jim will be preparing an extra special set of seismically stenchworthy sounds for the Ghetto Red Hotness.

During his time in New Zealand, the West Midlands born whiffy wotater of vinyl matter has been part of several soundsystems including the Stylee Crew/37 Degrees, Smokers Delight Sound and the Bureau De Bashment alongside longtime vinyl spar Slowdeck and the only MC ever able to consistently harness and enhance the pungent power – The Mighty Asterix.

He has played alongside literally hundreds of overseas artists and DJs in NZ and has spun in locales as illustrious as New York’s Webster Hall, London’s Fabric and Vienna’s Dub Club night at Club Flex as well as considerably seedier joints from JA to Barcelona.

Next up is the release of a brand new Unitone HiFi track ‘Up To Eleven’ on a split, limited edition 7″ (with a cracking Jefferson Belt cut) gently heralding the return of music making mischief with Joost Langeveld (and long time compardre Angus McNaughton) after an unfathomably long ten-year smoko.

Respect the unexpected.
