Atsushi Moisty

Originally from Japan and now living in Auckland, New Zealand, Atsushi Moisty is a song writer, guitarist, band leader, promoter, DJ, producer and teacher.

Atsushi has been leading a ska/reggae instrumental band called Atsushi and The Moisties for several years, playing gigs and festivals around the country. The band looks to re-create the sound of early ska from the mid-60s. Wearing animal costumes while performing is another unique aspect of their performance the band has become renowned for.

In 2008 the group released the Sound of the Ska EP, and in 2010 the Kingsland the Great 7″. Atsushi has also formed The Mini Moisties, which combines his passion for music and love of teaching, and features eleven and twelve year old children.

Over the last couple of years, Atsushi has promoted events for, toured, managed and performed alongside Chris Murray (US), DJ Mossman (Canada, musical director of Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae) and Stranger Cole (JA), to help connect world reggae music to the Aotearoa scene. He has also helped to coordinate the world tour for Miho Wada, played in Brazil, and recorded with Daniel from Satelite Kingston, a well known ska band in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Atsushi continually works hard to grow and develop the ska/reggae community in Auckland and he has started a series of events to bring together and help celebrate the diversity of Auckland reggae music. He also recently played a big part in the ska/reggae benefit show, Stand Rocksteady for Christchurch.

Atsushi and The Moisties are currently in the studio recording – stay tuned for their new material.
