As taut as the murderous device, Death By Dub’s “Guillotine” is horn-led yet groove-driven, a timeless slab of instrumental dub.
Death By Dub is effectively an American supergroup – featuring members past and present of John Brown’s Body, Jyemo Club, Pretty Lights, The Motet, and Thievery Corporation – those jam-filled roots have led to some dubwise fruits. While the horns bring the captivating melody lines, the rhythm section shines throughout, and the vibe maintains a crucial balance between heavy and light. That all adds up to make this description by bassist Dan Africano, who produced the track as well, quite apt indeed: “dynamic, edgy, and devoid of anything gentle.”
With a total of six singles out currently out – no misstep in sight (debut “Truth & Justice” is also stellar) – wherever this all leads is going to be quite exciting. Not just a studio project, the band has played some rare live sessions as well.
Out digitally on Colorado, USA label Color Red’s Bandcamp.
