The A-side to Gorgon Sound’s self-titled 2013 EP, “Rise” featuring Junior Dread has long been a call to action, primed for delivery via a late-night sound system.

Decrying government lies and destruction through its central theme of “cherish your life, fight your right”, Junior Dread’s live revisiting* is all-too-timely, given the thick(ening) hold of authoritarianism across the globe. Music, like all culture, wields tremendous potential.

There’s vocal and (uncredited) dub here, running sequentially on the record and as part of the same digital track. The production is sparse to start, allowing the lyrics (and earnest delivery) to fully set the stage, before unleashing first the melody and then the depth of the bass weight.

“It’s the time, yeah.”

As of publication, both the digital and recent vinyl repress are available on the Peng Sound Records Bandcamp. However, Peng Sound recommends RWDFWD for the vinyl (better pricing too).

* “Rise” is the closing track of a four-song live-in-studio recording (Evidence Music, Geneva, Switzerland), released in June, 2023
