‘Sirens in the City’ is the debut vinyl release for iconic New Zealand hip-hop artists, Dam Native.

A collector’s item pressed in very limited quantities onto pristine 12″ vinyl, the single features influential work spanning two albums and almost two decades from Aotearoa’s pioneers of ‘Horified’ hip-hop.

An instant New Zealand classic, ‘Sirens’, features on Dam Native’s second album, ‘Aotearoa…Nobody Does It Better’. The single also includes a bonus remix from producer/singer Chong Nee, the Album version with a hard-hitting verse from guest MC Tyna, and the Hori Acoustic mix.

Side B features one of the nation’s most defining hip-hop tunes, ‘Horified One’, featuring vocals from Teremoana Rapley, first released in 1995 on Tangata Records, and also featured on the debut Dam Native album ‘Kaupapa Driven Rhymes Uplifted (KDRU)’. It also features the Instrumental mix produced by Zane Lowe, and the leading single from their second album, the defiant ‘Lick My Patu’ – Dam Native at their militant best.

Dam Native have played a fundamental part in establishing a unique, conscious, and heavy New Zealand sound. Lead by Daniel Haimona AKA Hype the Native on lead vocals, and Bryson Campbell AKA Blakman, BLK, Black the Native, Dam Native continue to perform regularly with a six-piece live band.

Their debut album ‘Kaupapa Driven Rhymes Uplifted (KDRU)’ released in 1997 remains one of the country’s all-time classic hip-hop releases, and features timeless singles such as ‘Behold My Kool Style’ and ‘The Son’. The band released their long awaited second album ‘Aotearoa…Nobody Does It Better’ (Heart Music) in 2010. Honed over a five-year period, this release followed on with more skillfully crafted beats and lyrics, including songs like ‘The Majestic’ and ‘Cracked It’.

Heart Music was founded in 2000 and released and promoted Maori and Pacific Island hip-hop at a time when multi-national record companies in New Zealand viewed it as a passing phase.

Newtown Sound was established in 1998. Passionate about forwarding homegrown talent, it is a driving force in building the Aotearoa music scene, and operates in production, events, and promotion.

The 12″ vinyl single is available from all good music retailers in limited quantities at Conch Music (AKLD) and Rough Peel Music (WGTN).
