Representing his hometown, Christchurch, New Zealand, Gooba has an ongoing passion for old school jungle and reggae music. He runs 100% vinyl, promotes strictly positive vibes and is instrumental in the forward movement of Aotearoa bass music and culture.
Gooba has been a part of the music scene since 1993, first in bands, then running and promoting raves. He has run some of New Zealand’s most loved festivals, ‘New Beginnings’ from 1997 to 2000 and ‘I-Nation’ from 2008 to 2010, held at the famous Whitecliffs site. And many infamous underground parties at The Old Mill. Goob Central and The Bass Factory Warehouse.
After moving to the UK in 2000, Gooba deejayed at some of London’s notorious underground squat parties and gained exposure to UK sound system culture. Returning home in 2004, he was inspired to build his own rig which is now known as Bass Factory Sound System. Bass Factory sessions are a mainstay of the NZ scene and the crew are also responsible for the pioneering Sound Clash series.
Gooba has been involved with Christchurch radio station RDU 98.5FM on and off for the past 19 years, appearing on shows such as Drive, P3, Melt and more recently The MetroBeats show, which he took over the reins full-time in 2011. Catch him Friday nights between 8 to 9.30pm on MetroBeats for all your jungle requirements.
