Right Time is the 1976 studio album debut of influential reggae band the Mighty Diamonds. The album was released by Virgin Records after they signed the Mighty Diamonds, following a search for talent in Jamaica. It is critically regarded as a reggae classic, a landmark in the roots reggae sub-genre.
Several of the album’s socially conscious songs were hits in the band’s native Jamaica, with a few becoming successful in the UK underground. Influential and sometimes unconventional, the album helped secure the success of recording studio Channel One Studios, and rhythm team Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare.
This is one of my all time favourite albums. I came across it in a second hand record store in 1997 and a lot of the songs are still relevant today. The harmonies touched my heart and the lyrics are so true, from songs like ‘I Need a Roof’, ‘Right Time’, ‘Marcus Garvey’ and more.
Reggae music brings you joy and this album is a must to those who are just starting their collection of vinyl.
Tragically two of the group’s founding members passed in 2022, lead singer Donald Tubby Shaw in a drive by shooting, followed three days later by Fitzroy Bunny Simpson from illness. They are truly missed but their beautiful harmonies and lyrics will last forever.
