Lock Steady

DJ Lock Steady aka Negus Tafari was born in Auckland, New Zealand into a Rastafarian family, with reggae music being a predominant factor in his life from birth.

As a youth growing up in New Zealand, he was exposed to all the usual kinds of commercial radio and music, but this soon changed when at the tender age of five he traveled to Jamaica with his father, longstanding New Zealand reggae selector, Sgt Benji.

Here Lock Steady was introduced to top radio stations such as Irie FM and exposed to pulsating sound systems on every corner, not to mention being dragged around Kingston to every record distributor and various studios.

With reggae as his staple diet it was inevitable that Lock Steady would embrace the music and culture. In 2008 he started finding his own style and taste and began making refixes at home. He made his official DJing debut the following year at the Auckland dancehall club night, Daybreak.

Since then he has played with the Twelve Tribes of Israel Sound, has had two of his refixes pressed onto vinyl, occasionally plays on Base FM and KFM, and is receiving good promotion for his mixes.

Lock Steady is now honing his production skills studying electronic music production and is looking to focusing more on building his own riddims. Stay tuned as the best is yet to come from this youthman!
