Crucial Tempo is an online reggae records shop, based in southern France that ships worldwide, run by Mando.
Mando developed his love of reggae as a teenager in the 90’s. A friend had the Bob Marley album Rastaman Vibration and the lyrics of “War” and “Rat Race” got his attention. Then the music began to hit. The album cover said “This album jacket is perfect for cleaning herb”. Listening to an album distributed by a major label in the 70’s with the most engaged lyrics, without being politically correct, seemed so rebellious and it captured him.
He began seeing artists touring in France like the Gladiators, Abyssinians, Culture and the Mighty Diamonds. This was the perfect gate to reggae music. King Tubby and Lee Perry then Jah Shaka and the UK sound systems followed.
His first pieces of vinyl were Don Carlos and Gold, Them Never Know Natty Dread Have Him Credential and Doctor Alimantado, Best Dressed Chicken In Town.
After two trips to Jamaica in 2000 and 2001, Mando distributed three singles by Bobby Harris, produced by a friend in Jamaica on the Zion Hill label. He became interested in how records find their way from Jamaica to the European fan base. France was starting to really get involved with reggae music, with labels, artists and sound systems growing from an underground scene to a bigger movement. Crucial Tempo became official in 2006.
Mando began visiting London where he picked records from labels and distributors. After contemplating moving from the country to the city to open a shop, he decided to do it on the internet, which was the big change at that moment. The website was born in 2010.
Mando says, “Making a Top Ten is not an easy task. I will go for a list of tunes I recently added to the shop that caught my attention in the last months. Some are new, some are repressed. I enjoy them all, from roots to digital and dub from the UK.”

Pad Anthony – Rebel 7″ (Shaolin Records)
The long awaited release from Pad Anthony! Produced by the great Hitman and Fiza and mixed at Conscious Embassy Studio in Toulouse, France.

A 1977 killer version of Cornell Campbell’s huge tune, in a rockers style. With a Prince Hammer deejay version on the B Side. Crucial!

Al Campbell – Take A Ride 12″ (Studio One)
An Alan Campbell (not to be confused with Al Campbell) sought after Studio One cut on the Truth and Rights riddim.
Barrington Levy – One Foot Jo-Jo 12″ (Jah Life)
One of the most requested Jah Life releases is finally here. A killer Barrington Levy single from 1983, only ever released once on a UK 12 inch. It also appeared on the Teach Me Culture album, sans dub of course.
A perfect new pressing identical to the original. Play it loud.
Henry Simms – Live In Love 7″ (Top Ranking Sound)
Obscure and forgotten tune by a largely unknown reggae singer and producer from Jamaica in the 1970s. Henry Simms is now under the spotlight. A very nice roots tune!
